About this state
Sabah State Museum is Kota Kinabalu’s main museum of peoples, natural history and heritage, housed in a building inspired by traditional longhouse forms overlooking museum gardens. Outdoor grounds add reconstructed traditional houses and a steam locomotive, turning a museum stop into a small open-air cultural park.
Explore ethnographic galleries, wildlife displays and the outdoor village before or after city beaches and waterfront walks around town. Visit for a grounded introduction to Sabah’s many communities and landscapes—useful travel context before Mount Kinabalu, the offshore islands or the remote east-coast wilds of Sabah.
