Goddess of Mercy Temple
About this state
Goddess of Mercy Temple—also known as Kuan Yin Teng or Kong Hock Keong—is one of Penang’s oldest Chinese temples, tucked into George Town’s walkable heritage core. Incense smoke, hanging lanterns and worshippers fill courtyards that have served Hokkien and Cantonese communities for generations since the early nineteenth century.
Come for living devotion rather than a museum hush: watch offerings, photograph vermilion beams and lanterns, then continue into nearby clan houses and shophouse streets. It is an essential stop for understanding how Chinese faith, migration and street life still shape George Town’s UNESCO-listed heart.
