About this state

Penang State Museum & Art Gallery occupies a colonial building near the heart of George Town, gathering artefacts, maps, costumes and paintings that sketch how a free port grew into a multicultural island capital. Exhibits move from early Malay and trading history through British administration to the everyday lives of Chinese, Indian, Malay and Eurasian communities. It is an excellent primer before diving into street art and heritage streets—compact enough for one to two hours yet rich in context. Pair it with Fort Cornwallis or the Esplanade nearby, and check temporary art shows that rotate through the gallery spaces.
