About this state
Gurney Drive is Penang’s classic waterfront promenade—once a shoreline road of colonial bungalows, now a curve of sea views, condos and one of Malaysia’s most famous night-food stretches. From dusk, hawkers and restaurants fill the air with char kway teow, grilled seafood and the island’s skyline lights.
Stroll the esplanade for Andaman breezes, then eat your way along the strip or nearby malls. It remains a local-and-visitor ritual: come hungry after dark, claim a plastic stool or a waterfront table, and watch Georgetown glitter across the bay. Traffic along the drive can be heavy after office hours, so many visitors park nearby and walk the last stretch.
